| Yaguine and
Fodé’s Message

A founding document of IDAY, this letter was discovered
in Brussels on 2nd August 1999 on the bodies of Yaguine Koita and
Fodé Tounkara who died in the landing gear of a Sabena Airbus flying from Conakry, Guinea.
The message of these two young Guineans of 14 and 15
addressed to “Excellencies, Messrs. Members and
Officials of Europe” is a vibrant call to European
leaders to help improve the education situation in Africa.
It is also an unprecedented public claim by African
youngsters for their fundamental right to education
to be respected.
Yaguine and
Fodé’s deadly attempt to reach Europe exemplifies
the desperation as much as the rightful awareness of
their generation. It is a fundamental call that shall
not fall in oblivion before both Europe and Africa commit
appropriate efforts to achieve education for all in
Africa.
